Now Showing: your Valentine’s Day plan
When Dolapo “Lowla Dee” Adeleke moved to Kenya last year to collaborate on a social change film project with Sarah Hassan’s Alfajiri Productions, she had no idea that she’d end up making a movie about the consequences of a one-night stand instead. Yet Plan B the movie, Kenya’s latest rom-com, is here – and a strong contender for your Valentine’s Day weekend plan! We had a chance to sit with the powerhouse that is Lowla Dee – she also wrote the script, directed and edited the film (like a boss!) – and reflect on the filmmaking experience.
A post-breakup one-night stand gone bad
The story follows Lisa (Hassan), who finds out she’s pregnant after a post-breakup one-night stand with a mysterious man who just so happens to be a successful Nigerian CEO (Daniel Etim Effiong). Enter Joyce (Catherine Kamau), her unfiltered best friend who helps her come up with the perfect plan to get the father of the baby to pay his dues.
“These two (Hassan and Kate) are genuinely two of the best actresses in Kenya,” the Nigerian filmmaker says, “and they are so professional – they gave this movie their all. It’s very refreshing to see central actresses not competing with each other but working together towards a common goal. I felt like that was one of the most beautiful things in the film.”
A movie about the “baby mama”
Moving to Kenya was not without its shocks for Lowla Dee, who’s also the woman behind the series This Is It, starring Nick Mutuma. “I couldn’t believe just how normal the idea of being a baby mama is here. People talk about it openly, and I have friends who are baby mamas. Nigeria is a bit more conservative when it comes to this issue. It was a trend that was very new to me, I decided to explore it.”
We’re keen to see how the two stars relationship plays out on screen – and in the middle of a love story. The film premiered last night on NTV, and was released on YouTube today, 14th February (Check out the link below – the film’s already garnered more than 16,000 views in 6 hours). It’s showing at The Hub, for all y’all looking for the full date night experience, and will be available to stream on Showmax in March 2019. Usiseme ulikuwa busy. Enjoy!
