Makeup Fans Do You When To Throw Your Makeup Away?

It’s time to detox your makeup bag!

Ever wondered how long makeup products last before expiry? We’ve all been guilty of using items way past their due date but it’s time to switch things up. Keeping old products can expose us to harmful toxins and cause serious health problems, which is why we’ve pulled together a very handy guide to when it’s time to bin your beauty buys.

Find out when it’s time to toss out your makeup today:
1. Foundations

Depending on the formula and finish, foundations tend to last for one and a half years. Liquids and creams last between six to 12 months as they contain more water, oils and hydrating agents which shortens the shelf-life and has an increased risk of bacterial contamination. Powders can last up to two years as the dry texture doesn’t allow bacteria to grow as easily. However, it is important to use clean brushes and sponges to avoid product build up.

2. Concealer

To get that smooth, silky and blend-able texture, concealers use oils and hydrating agents such as shea butter. If your concealer dries out, changes texture, becomes cakey or starts to smell different, throw it out! Concealers normally last one year from the moment it is opened.

3. Lipstick & lip gloss

It’s time to toss your favorite lipstick and lip gloss when you notice a change in the texture. Whether that means they dry out or they get lumpy. This normally happens one year after opening the tube of lipstick.

4. Mascara

Every mascara should be tossed out every two-three months. As soon as you notice it getting clumpy and smelling weird, toss it and get yourself another one. And as a cautionary tale, never share your mascara with anyone, unless you want to get eye infections.

5. Eyeliner

Eyeliner tends to pick up lots of bacteria easily and since it’s used in a sensitive areas, it’s best not to take any risks. Pencils last longer than liquid liners, but sharpen them regularly, and get rid of them when they become dry and chalky. Using rubbing alcohol to sanitize sharpeners will ensure all germs and bacteria is killed.
