Controversial Kenyan author Kenneth Binyavanga Wainaina has come out as HIV positive.
Binyavanga who is currently based in Germany took to his Twitter by simply stating “I am HIV Positive, and happy”, triggering mixed reactions from his fans and critics alike. Binyavanga’s decision to come out on World AIDS Day was explained by his close confidant also based in Germany who told The Star:
“It is true, that is his twitter handle. Even of his Facebook page he said the same statement. He decided to make public his status to create awareness among many victims feeling stigmatized.”
Binyavanga who was listed in 2014 as one of Times “Most Influential In The World” came out as gay in an essay dubbed “Lost Chapter” in his memoir “I am a Homosexual, mum” Binyavanga is currently the director of Chinua Achebe Centre for African Literature and Languages at Bard College. His debut book, a memoir entitled One Day I Will Write About This Place, was published in 2011.
