“How To Bleach Skin” Is In 2016’s Top Five Most Searched On Google In Kenya

It’s that time of the year again where we recap on what we have been doing online, looking back at the previous years, this has surely been the year with the most stuff to find on the internet.

Getting off Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Google has become harder and harder as content providers increase by the thousands every single day. Kenya, East and Central Africa’s lead tech hub center, was not left behind in the googling, and it sure has been interesting to note our priorities. Even with the increasing popularisation of Kenya’s very own Lupita Nyong’o who is as natural and dark skinned as you can define it, there still seems to be a need for skin lightening and it’s techniques among our Kenyan women (and the few men).

On the “How to category”, “How to bleach skin professionally” comes at a number five with “How to lose weight fast” and “How to create a blog” taking the lead.

With up to 70% of women using skin lightening creams in some parts of Africa this discovery is not surprising at all and the only thing left to console us is the fact that, “How to keep natural hair soft” came at number three, just two steps ahead of bleaching searches.

Skin lighteners have become a common part of life in communities across the continent which is home to an estimated two-thirds of the world’s darker-skinned population. In the late 1960s, 60% of urban African women reported using skin lightener formulas. It became the fourth most commonly used household product after soap, tea and tinned milk.
