The average person is bombarded with TV ads, billboard campaigns and print ads. Adverts are a part of every industry and fashion is no exception.
However, when big brands cast for luxury campaigns and fashions shows black models are rarely (if every) featured with the exception of the big names we already know and love for example legendary supermodel Naomi Campbel. Liberian-born model Deddeh Howard despite being a beautiful model with a unique look kept encountering rejection on the basis that there were ‘enough’ black models already cast. An illogical reason, because shouldn’t it simply be the best person for the job?
Deddeh Howard realised diversity within fashion is a big problem. A problem she decided she must fight and so she fought fashion with fashion. She then created the Black Mirror Project where she collaborated with photographer Raffael Dickreuter to reshoot famous fashion campaign starring famous names such as Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss.
Here are the end results of Howard and Dickreuter’s hard work.
Hopefully, The Black Mirror Project will open up discussion on matters of equal representation in fashion so that we can find a solution.
